Telly

Bored with being a famous TV star? Make a record!

"People know that singing is not my bag," says Telly Savalas on the liner notes to this 1974 release, "but if I say, 'Hey, this is how Telly feels about this or that song,' I can't mistakes. I can only make mistakes by pretending to be a great singer".

A classic example of the "famous actor makes a record" genre, Telly uses his ill-begotten allotment of vinyl to thrill us with mediocre versions of "Something", "You and me against the world", "Rubber bands and bits of string", and many (far too many) others. Unfortunately, Telly's classic New York drawl gets drowned out by the music on all but a few of the tracks, making this album practically worthless even to die-hard Kojak fans.

What is an actor doing making a record, you ask? Telly answers this question by modestly saying, "I was asked to make a record". One has to wonder exactly who did the asking, though.

Ever see one of Telly's movies when he had hair? Not a pretty sight! He was in some submarine movie - and he looked a lot like Don Rickles with hair. And you notice, you never SEE them together. Hmmmmm...

Not a lot of pople know how Telly suffered for his art. Man, all those lollipops rotted the teeth right out his head! His dentures eventually went, too! He was on his third set when they cancelled Kojak! What a PROFESSIONAL! He never complained.

I used to see him at Santa Anita a lot - playing the ponies. What else can you do when your show gets cancelled and got no teeth?

Does Kojak wish to take the blame/credit for this musical number or does Telly assume all personal responsibility? American Idol contenders stand back. Simon, where were you when Telly downstaged his contemporaries? Chuck Berry, where were you when we needed you to bang a gong the most? I'm afraid Telly gives a performance here that would be next to impossible for anyone to ever entirely forget. He sounds like a whimpering, beyond his prime, mere semblance of a man. Hopefully he did not have any delusions about quitting his day job. Or is this musical undertaking of catastrophic proportions the very reason why noone saw much of him ex-post Kojak? I think too it was a bit bold of him to pose without the sucker. That was his trademark. In fact, in mistaking himself for a musician, his trademark defines him quite aptly. (10-13-2004)

Hello -

I have this on vinyl, and may be able to convert it to mp3. I don't know how well the mp3 will turn out, as I'm still trying to get it to sound good.

I am looking for a copy of Telly singing "Who Loves You Baby", which is not on this album. That is great. (09-28-2004)

Denea (Denea@gmx.de) says:
Fellas, can you help me???

There is a discussion between my mum (at age of 57) and her friend (60), if Telly Savalas ever sang the Song "I was born under a wanderin' star", better known from Lee Marvin.

Did he??

Help me, they gonna get to crash their heads about this question!!! ;)

My mother's friend said, he could remember a gig on TV in Germany, where Telly sang it, wearing a hat, which he had drawn deep into his forehead.
My mother didn't see this show.... *g*
And she sticks to her opinion, that only Lee Marvin sang the "Wandering Star".

Please - save our lives! ;)

If you know the answer, please mail me!

THX!!
Denea

Oh, I forgot to say... I'm from Germany, so if my English isn't so good, please forgive me! :) (09-27-2004)

Hi
I've been looking for a Telly-song "You've lost that loving feeling" or just "Loving Feeling" for decades. I had a recording on a tape (prior to the casettes) and every now and then this tune - and especially in the Telly S-version - revisits my brain and I start humming/singing.
Can you help me: record-info, mail a mp3 or anything..
Best regards

Hallo folks,
there is a song from Telly Savalas not going from my mind which I would like to get saying something like : ...rendevous in the night ... coffee black, cigarettes ....some broken hearts never mend......
Who can help me to get the right title? (09-01-2004)

Karen A says:

I loved Telly, and would watch Kojak every week. There was no cooler man around, then or since. However, it's hard for me to believe that Telly actually sang, he was just too tough.
My mother gave me a 45rpm promo of 'IF',and drats, I don't have a turntable to hear it! Anyway, since there seems to be a bunch of folks who loved his singing, it seems wasteful for me to just look at it, it needs to be played. So if anyone is interested, I'm putting it on eBay in a couple of days. I hope whoever gets it will send me an mp3, so I can listen! I'd also like to hear the other song y'all are talking about - 'Rubber Bands and Bits of String'.
