Telly

Bored with being a famous TV star? Make a record!

"People know that singing is not my bag," says Telly Savalas on the liner notes to this 1974 release, "but if I say, 'Hey, this is how Telly feels about this or that song,' I can't mistakes. I can only make mistakes by pretending to be a great singer".

A classic example of the "famous actor makes a record" genre, Telly uses his ill-begotten allotment of vinyl to thrill us with mediocre versions of "Something", "You and me against the world", "Rubber bands and bits of string", and many (far too many) others. Unfortunately, Telly's classic New York drawl gets drowned out by the music on all but a few of the tracks, making this album practically worthless even to die-hard Kojak fans.

What is an actor doing making a record, you ask? Telly answers this question by modestly saying, "I was asked to make a record". One has to wonder exactly who did the asking, though.

A.M. Jackson (renosmen@aol.com) says:
Can anyone give me information on how to get in touch with Christian Savalas. I work with a band who has sampled the song "WHO LOVES YA, BABY" and we need to clear the sample with with the Savalas family. Telly owned part of the publishing under ChrisTelly Music, I have already been in touch with the co-publisher/writer and record company and I just need to speak to the Savalas family soon or we will have to re-record the song. Thank you for any help! (05-12-2000)

Joe M (GOOFOFNY@AOL.COM) says:
IM FROM FLORAL PARK NY WHERE TELLY SAVALAS WENT TO SCHOOL AT SEWANHAKA. ITS SO COOL KNOWING THE TELLY SAVALAS IS FROM AROUND HERE. IM ONLY 21 BUT I REMEMBER WATCHING KOJAK RERUNS AND MOVIES AND THE REVIVAL SHOW WITH MY GRANDFATHER AND PRETENDING TO BE KOJAK WITH THE LOLLIPOP IN MY MOUTH. ALSO TELLY WAS ONE OF THE BEST BOND VILLIANS EVER. TELLY SAVALAS I LOVE YA BABY (03-08-2000)

Paul S says:
"If.." by Telly Savalas was a number 1 pop chart hit in the UK. Such was its (inexplicable) popularity that it inspired an answer record (supposedly an out take of Tel a-mumblin' and a- grumblin' his way through his big hit with interjections from stereotyped "camp" US record producer)....even weaker than the record that inspired it if that's possible. It made the mistake of trying to make fun of something that is (unintentionally) funny in the first place- how pointless is that?. I'm not making this up. I have no idea who it was by.(Possibly the gravel- throated geezer who used to say "....at a cinema near you from friday.") There was another hit comedy record around the same era titled "King of the Cops" based on "King of The Road which featured a forgotten mimic "doing" famous US TV cops, including your man Theo. Older readers may also remember soul girl Sylvia's "Who Loves Ya Baby" (03-07-2000)

THEA'llknowing says:
The reason Telly didn't respond to the Sewanhaka Alumnus comments was because he'd been expelled... He was a client of the talent agency I worked for in the early 1970s. At that time, he was 'delighted' to talk about living in Floral Park --but it musta gotten old after a while, rehashing 'old times'. Alex Cord, on the other hand, is one alum' who does show appreciation for the fact that the sunset lingered in the west --it was a honing device to send us to Hollywood... (12-16-1999)

Eddie (egchristie@aol.com) says:
I worked on a film with Telly back in 1979. He did a cameo role and worked for only the day. When I approached him to tell him that I was an alumnus of Sewanhaka High School (as was he), he just gave me this blank look and sort of grunted. No response, not even a friendly "gee, that's great". Nothing! Then when we were finished shooting his scene, he took off without changing out of his wardrobe. He just went into the limo, and took off only to send back his costume at a much later date. I was truly disappointed. Really shot down my image of him. I am NOT a fan. (12-15-1999)

SHIRLEY L. RUARKE (SRUARKE@CCWILM.ORG) says:
I have been in love with Telly since I was 14 yrs. old. I am now 38 yrs. old. He is the sexiest man I have ever seen. I never missed an episode of Kojak and was deeply saddened when he died. It really hurt me deeply and I will always miss him. I never had the opportunity to meet him in person but I did receive his autograph from a school friend when I was 15 and it's something I will always cherish. It would have been nice to get the autograph myself but I probably would have fainted. What a way to go! I have over 800 pictures of Telly in my collection and am always looking for more. If there is anyone out there who would be willing to part with Telly's pictures just look me up here and we'll negoiate. Well, to all you Telly fans out there- "WHO LOVES YA, BABY?" (12-07-1999)
