Things Go Better With Love

Featuring Jeannie C. Riley's unbelievable country hit, The Rib.

At first glance, it might appear that the poster-sized, triple-foldout album cover is the best thing about this album from Jeannie C. Riley (of Harper Valley PTA fame). After all, it isn't often that you get a stunning 36" photograph with your album purchase. (It took five passes on an HP ScanJet to capture the image -- if you're very brave, click it to see the 433K high res version).

But, for all this, it's the music that counts. And the centerpiece of Things Go Better With Love is a song called The Rib. Like some kind of twisted, backwater, Limbaugh-approved version of feminism, The Rib seeks to extoll the virtues of womankind but doesn't want to risk offending the sensibilities of even the most chauvanistic male (probably a good plan, given the fact that Jeannie's legs seem to be one of the major selling points). The result is so farfetched that even after several listenings, I am still not sure what's going on. And Adam called me Woman... for I am The Rib.

The inside liner notes on my well-worn copy provide an address for the Jeannie C. Riley fan club (3106 Blemont Blvd, Nashville TN 37212) along with a message from Plantation Records that "This record is guaranteed against all defects including breakage, wearing out or any dissatisfaction on the part of the purchaser". So far, I haven't got any complaints.

Back Side Of Dallas (MP3) This is what big cities do to poor small town girls. It turns them into... bartenders? I don't get it. Oh, wait.
The Rib (MP3) Is this what they mean by "suffrage"?

A short prayer by the lone beatnik.

Dear Jesus,
Needless to say, the song is stupid as hell. that's why it's on this site right? Yeah, the song "I'm a woman, I'm going to kill your ass. The end" I wish that she was made out of my ass bone! I expected her to break out into "dem bones" at anytime. Just as well. She's a rib bone to be broken when the guy gets beat up by a bunch of Black Panthers in a dark alley (country music cliché). The only thing this album has good, besides some stupid songs, is a very sexy-ass J.C.R. Christian music with gogoboots and miniskirts. hot damn.

In Jesus' name I pray, oh dear sweet lord,

Amen. (06-14-2001)

Vynyl Junkie (SASdj@Yahoo.com) says:
This is some sort of odd cross between a personal ad, a poorly written resume, and the Bible all wrapped up in some clever Nashville packaging. It's interesting to compare this (Musically) to the Ballad of Jim & Tammy which proves that the music can stay the same (although I'll credit Ms. Jeannie for better lyrics!) but a great album cover can certainly sway people even if the album it containd leaves a bit to be desired! (11-08-1999)

Ed Kaz! (edmundkaz@aol.com) says:
All I can say is W O W. God Bless Jeanie C! Anyone know if she's still alive and kickin'? This album sure beats my triple fold-out of Isaac Hayes ("Black Moses.") On the cover, Isaac appears to be saying....AH DARE YOU TO SCAN ME. Later, Ed Kaz! CoolandStrange.com (11-06-1999)

Is it just me or does Jenny C. look really smokin on this album cover? Maybe a little stoned too? (10-17-1999)

The Doofus (a_doofus@yahoo.com) says:
I opened the full sized picture of this album cover and finally understood the true power of my cable modem! Instant access to cultural icons such as this should be enshrined in the Consitution. Only two more rolls of aluminum foil and I will be able to read your mind. (08-11-1999)

David Galaxy (jj@sleazerama.com) says:
Oops ! Get my song titles mixed up... should be 'He Made A Woman Out of Me' and 'My Man'. Two darn good tracks. (03-24-1999)

David Galaxy (jj@sleazerama.com) says:
Just picked up a mint copy of 'Jeannie C... and The Generation Gap'. Not sure if it's worth anything (Plantation Records). Anyway, didn't know too much about her, but between the artwork and various lovely shots of her on the back, it was worth getting. I'm very surprised - it's actually quite listenable ! Best song: 'He Made A Man Out of Me' - insane. If anyone's interested in seeing either the artwork (I have it scanned somewhere) or wants a copy on tape -- e-mail me. (03-16-1999)

a fake parakeet says:
Back in '67 Chick and I passed this Ho around like a six pack o' malt liquor!!! And the rest of the time, we just practiced bitch slapping this ho. Amen. (02-20-1999)

does anyone have jeannie c riley's album the girl most likely? ithink she is great and i am looking for this album. if you know where i can get a copy at please email me. thank you (12-25-1998)

michelle says:
if she wants to be so superficial then let her, it is her loss. If she uses herself to sell her music then she wont't be liked because of her singing talent but because of her body(sure it is great) but get a life. (10-08-1998)

Jerry Kanabel (hrprvlyguy@aol.com) says:
JEANNIE C. RILEY is the BEST! I have over 54 albums, CDs and Cassettes of her's. "Things Go Better With Love" was her third album from Plantation Records. My fav song from this LP is "The Artist" I am an Art Director myself and compliment the one who designed this album cover project. Inside it is full of other beautiful pics of Jeannie C. I met Jeannie in 1972 when I was 14 and we became instant friends and in 1985 I went to work for her in her offices in Brentwood, TN. A couple of years ago Jeannie asked me to design her CD cover for the Playback Records label. I LOVE MY BUDDY JEANNIE C. Anyone wanting more info on Jeannie e-mail me. Thanks for displaying her album cover for everyone to see! (04-20-1998)
