Enoch Light and the Brass Menagerie

"Not since Enoch Light's Persuasive Percussion revolutionized the entire concept of sound recording has an instrumental album created such a furore (sic) as Enoch Light's Brass Menagerie". So hails the liner notes on this 1969 collection of popular songs (including three from the musical Hair) done up with every variety of brass instrument available. Inside the fold-out jacket we get Light's usual paragraph-long treatment of each tune along with an essay that virtually credits Light with every musical innovation since the 19th century. That said, the tunes are pretty good -- dig yourself up a copy and give 'em a listen.

Wow, Enoch Light put the 69 back in "Stars and Stripes Forever". I didn't like the song that much to begin with: but this version sounds a lot like "Soul Man" and "Who Do you think YOu are Mr. BigStuff" The mutilation of "Good Morning Starshine" is also appaling. Did Enoch Light perform any of the game show themes from the late 60's through 70's? Not only is the instrumentation the same but the production sounds identical to the themes of $25,000 Pyramid, Treasure Hunt, Matchword, etc. They all have that BIG sound. I found Enoch Light in the 1960's. The non-digital technology sounds great on my car stereo. I found some recordings for sale at Pentagon.com. They were out of stock of certain ones that I wanted. Since first visiting your museum Ive unearthed six Enoch Light albums, never paying more than, on average, a dollar a pop. (My favorite, so far, is 1973s Future Sound Shock with its warped fuzz guitar on the Duke Ellington song Caravan.) Ive even managed to find my own copy of Brass Menagerie Volume 2 -- in quadraphonic stereo sound, no less! (Gee, I wish I had a quad stereo system to play it on.) Here's another plug for The Midnight Midway on CBC RADIO 2 in Canada. It's on from midnight Nov 29 and 30 until 5:00A.M. On Sunday I have a chessy Burt Bachumenrty and play Enoch's version of Bond Street. It's a cool show. (11-26-1997)
