Renaissance

You probably thought the Village People packed it in after disco was declared dead. Not quite -- producer Jaques Morali had one more try at it, updating the Village People into some kind of nightmarish techno-pop band for this unfortunate 1981 release, Renaissance.

Like Boy George run amok, the once dignified Village People dress up like you've never seen them before. Look carefully: those men in the ridiculous outfits were once the Cop, the Indian, and the construction Worker we all came to know and love.

Despite their producer's efforts to remake the Village People, some of the tracks on this release retain that classic Village People pop sound. Still others attempt to mix in the new sounds of the 80's with the old sounds of 70's disco -- a combination that doesn't always work as well as planned.

Come on, folks! Go easy on me--the Renaissance record was one of my first experiences as a songwriter and studio musician. Jaques Morali was sincere when we created this record. The new-romantic image on the album cover was actually a last-minute spontaneous decision by Jaques, after the music had been written & recorded, and I was just as surprised as you to see the way the cover looked! From the moment the record begins you know your in for a ride. A truely avant-garde piece of work, and it's no wonder that people down play it. The main reason for this attitude are the complex poly-rhythmic structures, the inventive synthesizer's, and the truely poetic lyrics that I think most people just dont get. Oh, are'nt those the guys that did YMCA? Yes. But you have to start somewhere, and I think Renaissance is the pinnacle of not just Village People's music, but the best, and most original music of all time (03-06-1998)
