Whipped Cream and Other Delights

Ok -- raise your hand if you didn't own this record.

What record collection would be complete without this Herb Alpert masterpiece? Certainly not mine! It has been said that the thrift stores of any large city contain enough copies of "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" to wallpaper a house (I once found 10 copies in one small store in Cleveland, of which this one was in the best condition).

When I was growing up, "Whipped Cream" was one of only three records my parents had in their collection (the others were a Barbara Streisand album and a Johnny Mathis christmas record). My dad often dropped the needle on "Whipped Cream" over and over again during family gatherings -- and when no one was around, I'd spend hours admiring the cover art, attempting to discern exactly where the whipped cream ended and the young model began. You can do the same by clicking above for the extra hi-res version of the image. (Those of you that aren't inclined toward the female form can look for the way they used a drop-cloth to fake most of the cream, or if you're really bored, try to find the seam where I pasted the two halves of the scanned image together).

A record like this could easily have sold a billion copies on the strength of the photography alone, but "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" actually has some pretty snappy music on it. Pick up a copy today I can state with confidence that this album is available for $1.00 or less at a junk store or garage sale near you!

Wallpaper

I used Paint Shop to create a great Windows Desktop Wallpaper out of the Whipped Cream cover art by shifting the model to the right, cropping out the text and extending the background to the left (see the thumbnail below). I made three resolutions, so download the one that fits your desktop:

I got sent home from school because of this lucious piece of whipped porn. Well, it was the closest thing to porn that a 4th grader could get his eager little hands on 1968. (05-03-2006)

Jonathan says:
To Gerry and Tom: The Baja Marimba band wasn't parody. Entwined with Herb at A&M, they were fun loving and covered many popular songs of the day using pop jazz instrumentation and of course, marimbas and vibes. The TJB and the BMB shared many musicians. My dad used to have all that stuff on vinyl back in the '60s and '70s along with all the other pop-jazz of the day, especially the Latin stuff like Sergio Mendez. Its feelgood music for me of my childhood. (05-02-2006)

Little know fact: Leon Russell played piano on this recording.

And that's why it's in my record collection - No, really, honest. (02-19-2006)

Richard Vasquez (rick0322@prodigy.net) says:
I am currently working on a project for a music appreciation class. I selected Herb Alpert so that some of the youngsters in class can appreciate his great music. My brother and I played in a band in the late '60s that covered his music. We had the opportunity to meet Mr. Alpert when he came in concert here in San Antonio. Just imagine how nervous I was, at the grand old age of 11 meeting such a great musician! My bother still teases me about the experience. My brother kept the album collection, I am suprised we didn't wear them out. (01-30-2006)

Tom Hudson (tedwardfox@yahoo.com) says:
Love Herb and TB, and especially this album, but my question is about a parody band back in the early 70's that did TB-like music but with a comedy twist. I think the lead's first name was Don but the rest has faded into my distand memories. Can anyone help on this? I think they put out 2 or 3 albums back then and I would love to try getting hold of them. Muchas gracias if anyone remember them. (01-27-2006)

Lori J says:
Oh my G! I have this ablum and totally forgot that I did...until now! Must admit, "The Lonley Bull" still can make me cry like a baby. I remember my parents going nuts-o over the "cover" and I would have to ask if I could hear "the bull song" and then they would put it on the HI-FI. Hey! I dig being 49 and a "Boomer". Kids today just don't appreciate a darned thing...like GOOD music! The Rapper, Akon, is using a "chipmunk" version of Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely" in his song "Lonely", so o.k., I stand corrected. So many of OUR songs are being resurrected and I'm lovin' it! (09-04-2005)

Greg says:
I've had this LP for many years and never noticed the fetching girl on the cover before reading your article! Now it's worth a further look ....

BY FAR THE BEST THAT MR.ALPERT AND THE GUYS HAD TO OFFER. (08-17-2005)
