Jesus Is A Soul Man

When Christians attempt to be 'hip'

I don't buy a lot of Christian records, but this one from the Sego Brothers & Naomi had just the right hook to catch my interest: Jesus is a Soul Man. Get it? I love the way bible-belt Christians will co-opt almost any aspect of secular culture to get their word out. One day Jesus is a Soul Man, and the next thing you know, there are Christian heavy metal bands playing at your local football stadium. Watch out!

This is pretty much a one-joke record (unless you count the subjoke included in the title song, I'm sure SOULed on him). I suppose the idea was to get the kids interested enough to listen to the more serious Jesus tales later on the album.

Interestingly enough, Jesus Is A Soul Man comes to us from Nashville-based Spar Records, the same recording geniuses behind The Now Generation. I guess when you're hip, you're hip!

Ah Come On. This Ain't Nothin like the Singing Wauhob Family. The Wauhobs are to Gospel Music what Mrs. Miller is to pop music. (06-05-2001)

Darren Hacker (hackerhut@earthlink.net) says:
I've had this record for years. If you look closely at the cover art, you'll notice that Naomi's shirt/jac pattern forms what is clearly an upside down cross. Naomi is in fact, the antichrist. I new there was a reason I loved this record..... (05-13-2000)

Sammy Reed says:
1st of all, my dad is a DJ at a gospel station, and they have that album gathering dust somewhere. Anyway, I have an album by a group called The Gospel Creation, and one of the songs is "If You Love Him", to the tune of that Olivia Newton-John song. "If you love Him let Him know, and to you His love He'll show, There shouldn't be another minute, unless Jesus Christ is in it..." (05-08-2000)

spot says:
youthink this is bad? i have the recording of col harland sanders {yes that one} preaching a testimony on his conversion to christianity at the age of 312 or something, now that is enough to make one question the existence of a benevolent god {see also "dear god" by xtc}. that should have annoyed several godbotherers so i shall bugger off. tata (02-04-2000)

Pattis_99 says:
I had a personal experience with the Sego Brothers & Naomi back in 1983. By then, Naomi's husband (the man to her left on album cover) passed away and she decided to create new members including her son and a couple of other people. My boyfriend, Steven Potter (a cousin)at the time played the drums. We had fun traveling on her chartered bus to small churches and singing the gospel. Although I choose a different path (US Navy), I still remember the good times we had in Whitehouse Tenn. playing in their studio in the garage. Just before I moved back to Arizona, Naomi remarried. Enjoy the Music! (01-25-2000)

Don says:
I liked the music and message - I see nothing wrong with the album cover - different style of dress and singing maybe - but the same Jesus who is 'the way, the truth, and the life' John 14:6 (12-26-1999)

I LOVE this website. I think it's great reading the postings of such a diverse group of people. Usually, you don't get to hear from unironic, since re Christians and foul-mouthed heathens on the same page! I'm glad to hear that lots of practicing Christians ( I'm a recovering Baptist myself, but that's another story ) were also annoyed by some people's attempts to dress up the Word of God in whatever rags they'd skinned off the hip trends of the moment. I always found that more offensive than some of the things that Christianity is supposed to be rescuing us from. It always sent a signal to me that some people thought that God's WOrd wasn't powerful enough to reach people without resorting to condescending attempts to bridge some percieved "generation gap." AL Green is Christian, and is pretty cool because he's talented and sincere in his religious beleifs, and Amy Grant is popular because she's not hitting you over the head with her religion, she's just being true to herself and what she beleives in in her songs. People should realise that the sincerity and success with which people live their lives speaks louder than these lame attempts to be "hip" or "down it' all dat." Oh, goodness, I'm off on a tangent, aren't I? On the subject of campy Christian records, I would love to hear some more Little Marcy records - little did I know that she was appalling many more people across the land than just myself. ( How long do church libraries KEEP records? I first had to endure that one well into the CD age!) Still, Lil Marcy ( she should do a single with Lil Kim! ) isn't quite as funny as "BELIEVERCISE 2" - a Christian aerobics album from the Knight Rider era, if the cover model's haircut is anything to go by. My boyfried and I(see what I mean by being a recovering Baptist?) bonded over this album, debating over which was scarier - that we BOTH had family members that owned this album, or that the idea was popular enough to spawn a "Beleivercise" PART TWO!!!! hmmmmmmmmm..sole or soul...kinda fishy but if jesus wers a cheese man then i could understand the jacket photo. (06-17-1999)

Tom Tuerff (ttuerff@aol.com) says:
Actually, "Jesus is a Soul Man" was actually a hit record for an African-American group whose name escapes me at the moment. It came out at the time when there was a whole slew of "kinda" religious records: "Put Your Hand in the Hand," "My Sweet Lord," "Spirit in the Sky," "Oh, Happy Day," etc. The tune is similar to "You've Got What it Takes," the old Mickey and Silvia song. (06-07-1999)

Red1Cat says:
Repeat this prayer and Jesus will be your soul man. Lord Jesus- I believe you died for my sins and I ask you to come into my heart as my lord and saviour. I renounce my sinful life and desire to serve only you lord jesus. I believe you are alive and the living god of my life. Amen If you prayed this prayer you are now saved. Praise the lord! Begin to read your bible and find a church in your community. Praise God your are saved. Glory to God (06-05-1999)

they say it can't be done. they say it's not for real. they say that no one can cross over to the other side and come back to describe what they've seen. but frank did it! frank crossed over into the most fiery reaches of the lowest hell and brought back this album. just to show us what's on satan's p.a. system to torment the sinners for all eternity. frank's "da man".
