Stoop Down Baby

Stoop Down Baby... Let Your Daddy See is quite possibly the single most offensive record I've ever seen. Going for laughs at a time when ribald sexist humor was somewhat more acceptable, bluesman Chick Willis devotes the entire first side of this album to a 21-minute rendition of the title track. Stoop Down Baby consists entirely of Willis making one degrading remark about the female genetalia after another, with a live (?) audience joining in at the end (the audience members having even less tact than Willis when it comes to shouting out the four-letter words).

The small "Some selections may not be suitable for airplay" warning on the back of the jacket is a considerable understatement for an album by the man who "tells the ladies to stoop down, then plays the guitar with his tongue". One wonders what Willis is doing now -- I find myself guessing he must have eventually met a woman who gave him a few things to "stoop down" about himself.

this is one of the first songs i ever heard on my great-grandmothers old time music box. we just laughed and laughed. i have not been able to find the original recording or the artist, she sang stoopdown baby, let your mama see.to which we thought was something. even in todays society its a hoot. it was the first time we realized 2 woman could be such friends. no wonder grandma only played it sometimes, to which she would be rolling! i'm glad to find this copy by Chick Willis! Man I was an assistant Officer Club Manager at Fort Sill Oklahoma back in the 1970's The club usually had some Western Bands to come in and play but when Chick came in and played, the crowd went crazy, the audience was predominately white, but we blacks just had a ball Especially after Chick & I reminenced about our home Atlanta and talked about all the old musicians and clubs. He really tore the house down when he played the Guitar with his teeth. I wanted to book hime for all of the Clubs on all of the bases, but I had to report to DC on military business. I tried to keep in contact but to no avail but I did find the 45 on Laval label, however I do want the full version of Stoop down. Chick if you read this , give me a holler. I am living in Ohio now and on the Broadcasters Hall Of Fame Board of Trustees.

You asked, "One wonders what Willis is doing now." Well, I just came from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame & Museum where Chick and band played one of the greatest sets I have seen. The man is 72, but you would never know it. He may be known for the risque stuff, but that was a minor part of his act, which featured great blues standards from Lightnin' Hopkins, Ray Charles and others. The man is genuine! (04-04-2006)

Chick Willis' first record was in 1957. He recorded for Ebb Records as Robert Willis. The songs were "Never Let Me Go" b/w "You're Mine" (Ebb 126). (10-10-2005)

Chick Willis is cousin of 50's R&B star, Chuck Willis ("CC Rider", "What Am I Living For" etc)Robert "Chick" Willis actually began recording shortly after his cousin passed away in 1958 (complications due to food poisoning). Chick lives in Atlanta and I think he is co-owner of a blues joint here. (08-30-2005)

This is actually a traditional blues verse, if not a blues song! First, "Race Records" have historically pushed the limits as far as lewdness and "obscenity" have been concerned...and, second, there were a lot of "party" LP's (as dirty as could be gotten away with) made by Black artists...Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley, et al...during the fifties, sixties and seventies!
