We're The Banana Splits

Your childhood TV rock-n-roll idols, on vinyl!

One of the greatest things about the music of the 60's is how it accessible it was to just about anyone. The cool kids had the Beatles and the Stones; middle America watched the Monkees; the hippies had the Dead and Jefferson Airplane; even Mom and Dad could swing to a homogenized version of Lennon & McCartney done up by Enoch Light or Tony Bennett. And for the toddlers, there were these weirdos, the Banana Splits.

I was suprised at how good some of the songs on this hard to find LP are (thanks to my friend Gary who let me borrow his copy). I'm not saying the Banana Splits were the next Beatles, but compared to the kind of music they make for kids today (the Barney theme comes to mind) this stuff kicks ass. Let's hear it for Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork!

walter williams (waltscruffy@aol.com) says:
today i watched a video i purchased of the banana splits live at hocus pocus park. ie-filmed at kings island in 1972. it would be fascinating if someone could find out where the girl is now who played in that sat. morning movie and see what her memories are of filming with the splits. one sad note- kings island well be gradually transforming its hanna barbera land section to a nic toons area. soon it will be as if the banana splits and all hanna barbera characters never existed there eventhough they were responsible for putting kings island on the so called theme park map. long live the splits! spent many a Saturday morning in front of the TV with a box of Captain Crunch watching the Banana Splits...what a surreal trippy show for kids - and those little girls singing with all the weird camera angles - no wonder I ended-up following the Dead.... (01-14-2005)

Another thing about this album is the studio singers did songs for other Hanna/Barbara cartoons. The male lead singer from the 'magilla gorrila theme', the Way-outs" on the Flintstones, plus other H/B cartoon character LPs. (12-24-2004)

Cazza (bloogroover@hotmail.com) says:
I would love to get hold of a copy of their shows on a UK format, to show my Kid what children's TV should REALLY be like. Anyway, you can get fab BS T-Shirts on ebay for 14 and I am going to treat myself to one, right now. (12-20-2004)

Firewing says:
Hi, I also have this LP. It was actually reissued recently on both the vinyl and CD formats. I have both formats and the CD has quite a few bonus tracks on it including tracks from "Meet the Beagles". I also have some of the 45's that were released from this LP as well as the two 45's that Kellogg's released. The 45 of the title song is quite different than what's on the LP. Longer version and likely the "hit" version. (12-08-2004)

I remember watching this Saturday mornings back in the Seventies and wondering if there was some kind of subliminal subversive message being conveyed by these lovable, albeit weird, characters. But,of course,I was mistaken. SMASH THE STATE!I HATE THE CAPITALIST SYSTEM!COMMUNISM IS INEVITABLE!aarrgghh..What's come over me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (12-03-2004)
