We're The Banana Splits

Your childhood TV rock-n-roll idols, on vinyl!

One of the greatest things about the music of the 60's is how it accessible it was to just about anyone. The cool kids had the Beatles and the Stones; middle America watched the Monkees; the hippies had the Dead and Jefferson Airplane; even Mom and Dad could swing to a homogenized version of Lennon & McCartney done up by Enoch Light or Tony Bennett. And for the toddlers, there were these weirdos, the Banana Splits.

I was suprised at how good some of the songs on this hard to find LP are (thanks to my friend Gary who let me borrow his copy). I'm not saying the Banana Splits were the next Beatles, but compared to the kind of music they make for kids today (the Barney theme comes to mind) this stuff kicks ass. Let's hear it for Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork!

I remember back in the late 60s when during a Rolling Stones concert at Altamont Speedway a fight broke out between the Banana Splits (they were the openning act) and the Hells Angles, does anyone know what the outcome was.. I have seen clips of the event that someone took on their home 8mm camera where snorky is actually driving over several of the Hells Angels Bikes with the Banana Buggy.

I used to watch this chessy but lovable show in the early 70's. They were an odvious "rip-off" of the Monkees, but what the hell, they were still much better.

I've been trying to find a CD, DVD, or even at least a Vinyl record to digitize. So far they eluded me..... (09-11-2006)

sandra (s.holding) says:
I used to got to a fashion college where one of my teachers said she was married to one of the original "Splits". Her name was D'Alia. She only had one name, like Cher. She was beautiful and smart, and very nice. I'm trying to find her. Last I heard, they lived in Los Angeles. If anyone has any info on these two, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm not a stalker, just trying to look up an old teacher. (09-09-2006)

The Bannana Splits were on tv in my childhood and my family and I loved them! I can still remember all the words to the theme song just about, and I sing it often, much to the delight of peers my age. I would dearly love to get a copy of their series to share with my children to keep the legand alive. I agree that childrens tv of today does not hold a candle to quality and fun that was avaliable in my youth, bring back the Bannana Splits! (09-01-2006)
