Pink Panther Country

He's not just a pink cartoon character... he's also a country-western musician.

Check out this beautiful picture disc I picked up at the 2000 Austin Record show. It's Pink Panther, that loveable cartoon character from the 70's, except now he's all about country/western music. Where did that idea come from? Was this kind of music popular with the kids back then?

What struck me as odd when I first saw this album is the fact that Pink Panther, if memory serves, was mute in the cartoons -- he never said a word. Yet here he is with a record. True to his cartoon image, the singing on this album isn't by the Panther himself, but by a contingent of backup vocalists who accompany the "Panther"'s various guitar strummings. In between the musical numbers, a helpful narrator keeps the kids up to date with the album's plotline.

The graphics on this album are everything a picture disc should be: crisp, bright, and wonderfully cartoony. Be sure to click the image for a closer look.

"Why can't man be more like animals?"
That memorable quote from The Pink Panther,
in "Sink Pink", apparently original
air date of 1965-04-12.

Steve Carras (gcarras@aol.com) says:
Hey Joli, that cardboard thing (i rememebr it, one of the best things ABOUT animation!) was from a 1968 short called "Pink-Outs" (not surpsingly, animation "historian" Jeffrey Lenburg CONMVIENTLY left this and many others out of his filmographies in one of his animation "encyclopedias" of the 1980s and beyond). That trick was taken from a 1957 Warner Bros,.Foghorn Leghorn called "Fox Terror" and in turn was in a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon "Senor Droopy". (04-09-2007)

Pinky Dave, I remember the Pink Panther uttering those words. I've asked several people in my lifetime and no one has ever been able to recall them. He was actually referring to an elephant in the cartoon and I believe he was referencing the elephant and a kind gesture towards the Pink Panther. (02-14-2007)

why can't man be more like animals. the only word ever spoke by panther (01-12-2007)

Pinky Dave says:
Interesting that no one on this site can remember The Pink Panther talking. I have never had anyone answer this question correctly when asked!
I belive that the incident occured on the last episode of the cartoon and Panther is talking in a distinctly British accent when he says after out witting his nemesis agian "WHY CAN'T MAN... BE MORE LIKE ANIMALS". Good luck trying to find the last episode as I have been looking since the advent of TiVo.
