Poe through the Glass Prism

Quoth the Raven, "Oh my God!"

Here's another one of those "concept albums" that people used to do back in the 70's before musicians realized that it was a bad bet to expect people to have any interest in actual artistry. This one has the bold idea of recording a series of rock tunes set to the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe. All in all, it's not a bad idea, and one that must have been largely lost on the dope-smoking rock-n-roll record buyers of the era.

The music on this album is really pretty cool. Check out "The Raven", which I understand hit the charts for at least a little while in 1974. Its wailing Hammond organ sounds and monotone vocal delivery are pretty catchy. I also enjoy the way the band combines early-Beatles haircuts with late-Beatles costuming. Who can possibly resist a band with a velvet jacket and a giant black bird? Not me!

I was born in 1962. Unfortunatly I was too young to experience an El Camino's or early Glass Prism show. In 1976 while studying the works of Poe as a freshman in Pittston Area High School, I was turned on to the Glass Prism. My English teacher brought the Poe album in as a teaching aid, and we listened to it during class. He let me borrow the album so I could tape it on cassette. Over the years I was able to get the Poe & On Joy and Sorrow albums for my collection and listening pleasure, and of course now on CD. Unfortunatly I wasn't able to attend the Philly show, but because of the reunion on Saturday June 7,08, my wife and I finally got to experience a Glass Prism concert! You were fantastic!!!! There wasn't another band anywhere that out performed you that nite! It's great to see musicians get back together because they just love to play music! If you did another concert tomarrow, my wife and I would again be in the front row!!!! Keep on Rock'in!!!! (06-10-2008)

Roberta Cerra (cerraw@aol.com) says:
When I was only 10 years old my mother used to take me to see the Glass Prism at St Pat's dances in West Side. My Godmother used to watch the teenagers at the dance. Back then it was Tom, Rick, Augie & Carl. I know Carl left the band in 1971 when I was 12 and joined the Buoys. I was wondering if Carl is going to be at the concert. I cannot wait until Saturday to see the concert. Roberta Lynn Cerra (06-06-2008)
