The Odd Couple Sings

Just when I thought I'd heard the last of singing TV characters, this gem shows up. It's Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, playing their famous characters Felix and Oscar... and singing. Why?

I tried to sing once, and I ended up sounding a lot like Jack Klugman does on this record. But at least I had the decency not to subject myself to thousands of unsuspecting record buyers.

Having written "The Odd Couple Opera" and "Happy and Peppy and Bursting With Love", I was certainly aware of the quality of the voices of Tony and Jack, and that certainly was not a discouraging factor, but a definite plus when writing for their disparite musical talents. The Odd Couple was the "comfort food" of 60-70's TV. You always knew what you were going to get. Oscar the slob. Felix the neat-freak. Tony Randall was a very funny guy, who had done Broadway musicals. Klugman, well, he's Klugman. The idea that these musical excursions were necessary for TV shows seems kinda quaint nonadays. Why not? Anything that brings us more Odd Couple can't be bad.

With all due respect, you're not a well-known actor portraying a beloved TV character. Also, as Robert posted on 10/7/03, Jack Klugman knew he couldn't sing and "sung" from that perspective, he never pretended to be a great singer.

For an Odd Couple fan, this is a wonderful album. I have a pirated copy on CD but if it were legitimately released I would buy it. Hopefully it would be an expanded edition, perhaps with other songs from the TV show - "Stumbling All Around" with Monty Hall, "Happy, Peppy and Bursting With Love" with Jaye P. Morgan, and Felix' tribute to Oscar ("O is for the oldest friend I know, S is for the way he saved my life...") come to mind, there may be more. (08-19-2004)
